Cancer Rehab Awareness Week 2022

Cancer Rehab Awareness Week

September 19-26th 2022

Join us September 19th - 26th in raising awareness about the benefits and importance of Cancer Rehabilitation services!

There are over a hundred thousand cancer survivors in Canada every year. With an increasing survival rate, the need for comprehensive rehabilitation care is growing. The cancer journey is unique and quite overwhelming for patients to navigate without guidance in managing the side effects of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. There is now an overwhelming body of research showing the benefits of physical activity and rehabilitation during and after cancer treatments in reducing symptom burden, preventing, and managing side effects of treatment, and improving the quality of survivorship and prognosis.

Unfortunately, many people are still missing out on this essential service and are suffering for an unnecessarily long amount of time after their treatment has been completed. Join us this week in spreading the word about these services and the potential benefits.

This campaign is led by PINC & STEEL International. PINC & STEEL has been the pioneering force behind the cancer rehabilitation movement in New Zealand and Australia since 2005, and is now extending their cancer rehabilitation programs worldwide.

I received my PINC Cancer Rehabilitation Certification in 2021, focusing on cancer rehabilitation for women with all types of cancer. I am happy to be fully qualified to support, guide, and rehabilitate people through every stage of their treatment and recovery.

My recommendation is to initiate rehabilitation as early as 2-3 weeks after surgery, thus addressing the functional range of motion, pain & inflammation and assist through all phases of tissue healing after surgery and radiation. The treatment focus and goals change as the person progresses through the cancer treatment. The good news is that it is never too late to start rehabilitation for cancer-related impairments
If you experience fatigue, difficulty with endurance or limitations in daily tasks, joint pain, or other cancer-related side effects, contact a physiotherapist with experience in cancer rehabilitation.
